Cold Weather Nutrition Matters!

When temperatures drop, sheep and goats burn more energy just to stay warm. If nutrition doesn’t keep up, body condition, immune function, and performance can slip fast.

Key cold-weather nutrition reminders:

Increase energy intake – Cold stress raises calorie needs. High-quality forage and balanced energy sources are critical.

Prioritize forage quality – Good hay isn’t just filler; fiber fermentation in the rumen is a major heat source.

Don’t forget protein & minerals – Adequate protein supports immune response, while minerals help maintain metabolic balance.

Fresh, unfrozen water is essential – Reduced water intake limits feed intake, which limits heat production.

Watch body condition closely – Thin animals lose heat faster and need nutritional support sooner.

Cold weather doesn’t just test your facilities—it tests your feeding program.

Proper nutrition is one of the most effective tools you have to keep sheep and goats healthy, productive, and resilient through winter.
