Know What’s Endemic in U.S. Sheep Flocks

sheep in pasture

Not all sheep diseases in the U.S. are rare outbreaks—many are endemic, meaning they are consistently present at low levels across regions and flocks. Understanding this is key to better health management and fewer surprises.

Why it matters:

  • Diseases like internal parasites, foot rot, caseous lymphadenitis (CL), and respiratory disease like OPP are commonly present in U.S. flocks
  • You can’t manage what you don’t plan for—endemic diseases require prevention, not just treatment
  • Stress events (weaning, transport, weather changes, lambing) can turn “controlled” problems into major losses

Best practices for managing endemic disease:

  • Work with your veterinarian to develop a farm-specific health plan
  • Use strategic vaccination and deworming, not blanket treatments
  • Practice biosecurity when introducing new animals
  • Monitor trends over time—performance drops often signal health issues before clinical signs appear

👉 Bottom line: Successful flocks aren’t disease-free—they’re well-managed. Understanding what’s endemic in your region helps you stay proactive, protect performance, and reduce long-term costs.

Performance Products

Simple and easy-to-use liquid biological products with diverse use capabilities.

RSG Prime can be used as a preventive tool in medicator systems or as a treatment drench to promote gut flora health.

RSG Guardian is designed to be used in stalls, kennels, showbarns, aviaries, or anywhere animals are housed.

cdt

Protect your lambs and kids early with CDT vaccination.

CDT (Clostridium perfringens Types C & D and Tetanus) is one of the most important vaccines you can give young lambs and kids. These diseases can strike fast—often with little warning—and can be fatal without protection.

Why CDT matters:

Helps prevent overeating disease (enterotoxemia) and tetanus. Critical during rapid growth and diet changes

Best practice:

Give the first CDT at 4–8 weeks of age

Follow with a booster 3–4 weeks later

Ensure dams are properly vaccinated pre-lambing/kidding so colostrum provides early protection.

Important: Always read the specific vaccine’s label for exact age, dose, route, and timing, and consult your veterinarian — some brands or situations might have slightly different instructions.

RSG clients can order CDT from www.myanimalRX.com

Repro Elite – RSG × Umbarger Crossfire: Targeted Nutrition When It Matters Most

crossfire

As females enter the final third of gestation and transition into early lactation, nutritional demands increase rapidly. Energy needs climb, intake capacity is reduced, and the margin for error gets smaller. That’s exactly where Repro Elite RSG × Umbarger Crossfire fits into a successful production program.

Endorsed by RSG, Umbarger Show Feeds, Crossfire is a medicated feed designed to support female health, fetal development, milk production, and overall flock performance during the most critical stages of production.

Why Late Gestation Nutrition Is Critical

During the last 4–6 weeks of pregnancy:

  • Up to 70% of fetal growth occurs
  • Ewes are at higher risk for pregnancy toxemia and metabolic stress
  • Poor nutrition can result in lighter birth weights, weaker lambs, and reduced colostrum quality

Repro Elite Crossfire delivers highly available energy and balanced nutrients to support ewe condition without excessive bulk—helping maintain intake even as rumen space becomes limited.

2025 RSG Foundation Highlights—Made Possible by You

Thanks to your continued support, the RSG Foundation made meaningful progress in 2025. We awarded 13 First Flock-Herd grants to youth receiving their first breeding ewe or doe, along with over $5,000 in semen grants to expand access to high-quality genetics. We convened global experts through the Small Ruminant Veterinarians Thought Leadership Summit, supported youth education initiatives like Freedom Farms and the children’s book Lanie’s Little Lamb, and extended our impact internationally through Handspun Hope in Rwanda. We also launched the Solar Grazing Health Initiative, creating new opportunities for sheep and goat producers in the growing solar grazing sector.

These achievements reflect your belief in youth, education, and a stronger, more sustainable small-ruminant industry.

ELP 2026

RSG Recognizes First Class of Emerging Leaders Program

RSG is proud to celebrate the completion of its year-long Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)—an internal initiative designed to strengthen leadership skills and support professional growth across our team. The ELP was created to provide meaningful leadership development opportunities for any RSG team member seeking to grow personally and professionally while contributing more effectively to our organization.

This year’s ELP graduates include Malorie Schmoll, Stanton Warren, Jill Merritt, Lindsey Scruggs, Blair Standish, Katherine Eastep, and Ryan King. Throughout the program, participants engaged in guided discussions, leadership exercises, and real-world applications focused on communication, decision-making, accountability, and team leadership.

The program was led and mentored by Dr. Scott Flanagan, Julie Premo, and Lauren Turner, whose guidance and commitment played a key role in the success of the program.

The Emerging Leaders Program reflects RSG’s ongoing investment in its people and our belief that strong leadership at every level is essential to long-term success. We congratulate this year’s participants and look forward to seeing the impact they will continue to make across the RSG team.
