In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) for Goats and Sheep
RSG specializes in advanced reproductive services for small ruminants, offering In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help producers accelerate genetic progress, preserve valuable bloodlines, and address donor-specific challenges.
What is IVF?
IVF is a modern reproductive technology that allows for fertilization to occur outside the animal’s body. Oocytes (eggs) are collected using a minimally invasive procedure called Laparoscopic Ovum Pick-Up (LOPU), then fertilized with semen in a controlled lab environment. The resulting embryos are cultured to the appropriate stage, then either transferred to recipient females or frozen for later use.
Why Choose IVF at RSG?
- Minimally Invasive Collection: LOPU uses only three small punctures, supporting quicker recovery and enabling repeat collections every 3–4 weeks.
- Efficient Use of Semen: A single straw can fertilize oocytes from multiple donors—maximizing rare and/or expensive units of semen.
- Broader Donor Eligibility: IVF can be a great option for animals with adhesions or those that haven’t responded well to conventional methods.
- Flexible Outcomes: Embryos can be transferred fresh or frozen for implantation at a later date, giving you the flexibility to match your breeding plans and ideal kidding or lambing windows.
