Understanding the Dwarf Gene in Sheep: Evidence, Insights, and Questions

On December 21st, we shared a video presenting new evidence about the “dwarf” gene in sheep on social media. The response was overwhelming, and we want to thank everyone who watched, commented, and posed questions.

We have posted an article along with the video as a follow up. We will strive to continue this discussion and provide clarity on this complex topic in the coming days.

Be Prepared for Lambing & Kidding in Cold Weather

Many are dealing with snow, ice and cold temperatures this week. Cold weather can be tough on newborn lambs and kids, but with the right preparations, you can help them thrive:

  • Warm & Dry Environment: Ensure your lambing/kidding pens are clean, draft-free, and well-bedded. Consider heat lamps or warming boxes for extra cold nights.

  • Colostrum is Key: Make sure lambs and kids nurse within the first hour to get the vital antibodies and energy they need. Keep colostrum replacer on hand for emergencies.

  • Dry Them Off Quickly: Newborns can lose body heat rapidly. Use clean towels to dry them thoroughly, focusing on their head and ears.

  • Check Umbilical Cords: Dip cords in iodine or chlorhexidine to prevent infections in damp, cold conditions.

  • Monitor Closely: Watch for signs of hypothermia or weakness, and act quickly if needed.

Preparation makes all the difference in ensuring strong, healthy lambs and kids this season.
